During the pandemic I think that I was most affected by how the natural world responded when we hit “pause”. Climate change is real to me and I have decided to focus my work on water and flora with the inclusion of a figure to symbolize our important connection to the natural world. Water is a sacred resource necessary for all life yet so many struggle to have it. It is at once life-giving and highly dangerous. As the earth warms so many areas are struggling to cope with the damaging effects of rising water, affecting mostly the poorer and indigenous communities. The Tyger River flows at the edge of my property and I have seen first hand the effects of our mismanagement of natural waterways. During storms, excessive run-off from overbuilding upstream and destruction of natural buffers causes the river to become extremely muddy and polluted affecting local habitats. I find this heartbreaking. I used water as my signature element of distortion and my contribution to the narrative.
