Teachers are the most flexible people I know. We adapt to hardships, always with our own style. Whether we’re teaching in person, online, or both, we make it work, and we make it our own. 2020 brought us self-expression through masks, a perfect visual representation of teachers’ ability to shift paradigms, to morph our instruction and, in a way, our very identities at a moment’s notice. To change everything but still be completely ourselves, still creative, still expressive, still committed. I painted over 60 portraits but then made four “walls” representing my own personal teacher networks. They are just cross-sections of the brilliant educators I happen to know, from a range of academic subjects, levels, and mask styles for each. Each teacher has their own framed spotlight, but those frames are joined to show how even in isolation our networks remain. The grids together represent the synergy created through teachers across different buildings and backgrounds sharing who they are.
