Lee Malerich spent most of her career with a needle in her hand, producing small stitched narratives describing the experiences of women's lives. Her work became very topical as she waged her battle with colon cancer, illustrated in these embroideries. For this textile work, she earned some acclaim and much discussion. The work has been exhibited widely.
Lee moved a 1939-built farmhouse in 2004 and renovating it required most of her creativity. At the end of this period, she emerged with an interest in working with wooden windows, tongue and groove, and sanding in patterns. It took more than six years to retrain for the new medium. It was not until she was given a warehouse full of damaged chairs that the work began to flourish. Her narrative is constant throughout her work, but the words telling the story have changed.
