In this image of War and Famine, War has many faces and wears many masks. Behind it, disembodied hands form a halo around its head and its own hand reaches out to sign a document. Famine, on the adjacent panel, is wearing a scold's bridle to represent not only a lack of nourishment, but a lack of speech, and a lack of identity. She is being torn at, groped, and covered by the same hands that formed War's halo, and being led by the figure of a child who is picking apart and examining what she has left. Both War and Famine mirror each other and can be seen as two parts of a whole. When I made this piece I was under a great deal of stress and suffering from violent and realistic hypnagogic hallucinations that would cause me to wake up multiple times throughout the night. Because of this I was only 3-4 hours of sleep a day, which only made things worse. I based the characters in this image off of the hallucinations I saw, and my view of the world and current events at the time.
