Anne Wehrley Björk grew up in New Mexico near the World Heritage Site and Indian ruins of Chaco Canyon, where much of her artistic vocabulary originates. The pathways, sandstone walls, and petroglyphs are etched into Björk’s mind as she recalls the mystical and spiritual pathways and energies of the ruins in the remote canyon of Chaco. The surrounding mesas, ladders, and stairways of the multilevel pueblos, as well as the underground circular kivas, inspire Björk’s paintings. She paints in the spontaneous, gestural style of the Abstract Expressionists. Her palette is inspired by the light in the Mediterranean port of Collioure, France, where artists from the late 19th century Fauvistic Movement such as Andre Derain, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and others lived and worked. The bright orange rooftops and cerulean blue sea, along with the lavender-hued light continue to draw artists to this alluring seaside village today.
