My mixed-media installation, Brown Stone Cathedral, begs to be opened. Originally from The Bronx, I have spent most of my life in North Carolina. Having retired from teaching in NC, I now teach art in South Carolina. I have always favored collage, but Brown Stone Cathedral marks my first endeavor into truly interactive art. The piece embodies an interior/exterior dimension of southern life with architectural inspiration from my birthplace of New York. The installation was created over the course of three years, culminating in a collaged apartment vignette that asks the viewer to renegotiate their place among our collective identity as Americans. Inside the piece is a harmony of difference: the myriad apartments form a cohesive complex, and each individual room shows the lived experience of its occupants coexisting with one another. I ask the viewer to reflect upon their place in a post-pandemic South; how do we cobble back together a community when we have closed so many of our doors?
