Artist Statement

My piece "Accountable" is about holding those in power accountable for the lives of people of color who have been lost due to police brutality, and unnecessary violence. Each of the 100+ names in this painting represents individual cases where the victim and their families have or have yet to receive any true justice. This is my way of adding to the conversation of race in America and trying to honor those we've lost, their families, and the legacies they've left behind.

Artist Biography

Joanna Henry

Rock Hill, SC

Originally from Florida, Joanna moved to South Carolina in 2007, where she began her education and career in art. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Winthrop University in 2015 and went on to intern with the Charlotte Art League and the C&H Museums of York County. Joanna is an ArtPop Street Gallery alum and the Artist Development Coordinator for the Catawba Indian Nation. Her work has been featured in multiple exhibitions, and markets throughout the east coast. Currently Joanna continues her practice as a studio artist and teaches pottery classes at the Village Studio & Gallery in Charlotte, NC.
