Unlike so many of the staged, perfect photos we see today, antique photography displays a true moment in history. In a time where our social media is flooded with filtered and altered photos, I look at my old photographs and know that their lives were not perfect. Long hours spend laboring in the field could be rewarded or not. The demanding work could be a waste of time if nature did not cooperate, but they endured, and did the work anyway. The woman in this piece wonders what the coming year will bring. For me, this artwork calls to mind the quote “He who plants a seed beneath the sod and waits to see believes in God.”
