In 2012 I suffered a nerve injury in both my arms, ulnar nerve entrapment. For the next five years, I labored with teaching myself how to draw and paint with my opposite hand. In this dark time in my life, I had to draw on my inner strength to rise above the situation. This work is a part of a series that explores the relationships between "carnal" and "divine" natures. Carnal, for me, does not exclusively mean sin or sexual desire. The body requires certain things in order to survive in the wild. It craves food when hungry, seeks out shelter from harsh weather, requires water when thirsty, and of course desires sex for reproduction and pleasure. I use the term "divine" to represent one's intangible life force. This aspect includes abstract thought, reasoning, wonder, self-reflection and a connection to higher forces. Some may consider this the human "soul."
