I am both a potter and a basket weaver, using traditional materials collected from the South Carolina forest floor combined with found objects and sculpted elements. Drawing on the long tradition of coiled basketry, which derives from both African and Native American roots, I attach reeds like bulrush, sweetgrass, and long leaf pine needles to wheel-thrown and hand-built stoneware vessels, creating a dialogue between two rich and vibrant traditional cultures and the natural.
In an attempt to conserve the rapidly dwindling supply of sweetgrass, I began several years ago to incorporate elements made of stoneware clay. This process has allowed me to use about fifty per cent less sweetgrass in each piece, no small matter now that the fiber is so hard to come by.
I hope my work will help preserve two venerable art forms, tell stories of human suffering and transcendence, and persuade others to protect the divine resources of our planet.
