Lakea Shepard, a North Carolinian, is a textile-based sculptor and milliner. Lakea studied at UNC School of the Arts, and received her BFA in Crafts with focus in Fibers at College for Creative Studies. She also attended New York Studio Residency in DUMBO, NYC.
Raised by a mechanic and textile worker birthed Lakea’s passion for creating head-sculptures using traditional African techniques such as beading, weaving, and basketry. Her work is submerged in symbolic universal objects speaking to obstacles within Black America. The conceptual bases for her work is developed through dreams, historical and personal traumas. Each piece Lakea creates incorporates red thread, symbolizing vitality and womanhood. The red thread is also metaphorical for veins, which implies bringing life to her ideas.
Lakea’s work has been shown throughout the east coast. Her most recent being a solo exhibition at Contemporary Art Museum of Raleigh. She is currently completing a nine month residency in the South.
