Continuing with my nature series, I am trying to have my work come off the canvas. I feel that using fiber to represent elements in nature encourages the viewer to reach out and touch the piece thereby giving another layer to my art. To achieve the look of leaves fading from spring colors to summer and finally the decayed look of fall leaves, I hand dyed cotton organdy which I then cut, layered and appliqued pieces of the fabric to give each leaf a unique personality, adding stitching, netting and felting dyed silk roving to the surface. The decayed look and the look of insect damage to the leaves was done using a blow torch and wood burning tool. In order to get the leaves to have dimension, EVA foam was used as the inner layer, with felt and wool bedding added and once quilted and burned, a hot air gun was used to form the leaves to the shape I wanted.
