I was born and raised in the American South within a Cuban household. Cultures were distinct but merged. The smells and languages and superstitions were different but gender roles were eerily the same and they were traditional. I find myself in a familiar role as an adult- married, mother, homemaker in a bicultural household. I grapple with what it means to hold these roles, whether I chose them or whether they were bestowed on me by generations past. As an abstract painter I found myself drawn to fiber and began to weave as way of formal grid building but also as a way to embrace an artform that women who held my roles also embraced. I weave and manipulate textiles to create sculptural paintings. I question past and present notions of labor as it relates to women's work and minorities by combining vintage weavings with contemporary fibers. In my work, weavings and patterns that were historically made and used for domestic purposes are reframed and reconsidered as fine art.
