A girl’s body becomes under the most scrutiny at its most awkward. This is especially sharp in this time when the fate of the female’s body is not entirely in her hands. You want to shield and protect, but also strengthen them for the fight that surely lies ahead. Being a mother can be the most ordinary and the most terrifying experience. A child’s growth reminds you that ultimately, you will not last and that your job is to prepare them for when you are no longer there. Out of fear, there is an urge to try to bend them into the shape that you want. The more you twist, the less grasp you have and they inevitably spring out of your grip proving you wrong. This piece is a reflection on my experience of the past few years as the roles I hold as teacher, artist, and mother continue to overlap more and more. To try to capture the feeling of unease crashing head first into the happy childhood memories and experiences I am trying to create for my child.
