Hairitage combines elements of past and present African American traditions, focusing on the history of black hair and its influence on my life. Through this work, I am challenging my identity as an African American woman; I have never been happy with my ethnicity, nor did I associate myself with African American culture. Feelings of disassociation and guilt are the driving forces behind my work. While crafting this work, I use my materials as a metaphor for the tension and struggle I experience with identity. Additionally, this body of work explores the themes of memory, time, body, and language. I convey these themes using sculptural, photographic, and text-based approaches. My work utilizes various materials that are inherent to African American cultures which include: natural hair, cotton, combs, and weaving thread. Each of my pieces acknowledges the return to black culture and rituals and contrasts the underlying desire to be Caucasian and the erasure of cultural identity.
