“Infinitum (When There is no Sun)” is a view of the street from the front porch of my childhood home in Columbus, GA. The piece is a visual metaphor detailing my privilege within my family dynamic as well as my connectedness to the home. My brothers are all positioned in the yard, further away from the home and closer to the street. The distance signifies a space of separation from the privilege I was often afforded because of their being further away from ideals associated with “goodness” in our home growing up. However, in the street, my brothers command a metaphysical happening in which a huge sphere of Blackness is descending upon the landscape. This sphere serves as an engine that powers my brothers’ abilities in opening portals to different dimensions or spaces of being where they can be free. The piece illustrates that there is power in stepping away from harmful paradigms that do not serve us and freedom in challenging ourselves to do the difficult.
