As a female immigrant artist, I define immigration as throwing yourself into an unknown situation wherein everything is uncertain, undefined, and in a state of constant change. However, this change is not necessarily in your hands; it could instead be imposed to you where you have no option but to tolerate, survive, and continue. This situation is left you dependent, vulnerable, and exposed. Invitation is a temporary large-scale floor installation that explores the ambiguous, paradoxical, and yet-to-be-defined meanings associated with belonging. In this installation, I investigate precariousness charged by socio-political space and my chosen material speak the temporariness and ephemeral quality. Dust from abandoned places has been gathered as the primary material and sifted to create this phrase: You have the right to stay here! The creation process is tedious and laborious, yet the piece is left behind for gradual deterioration, exposed and affected by natural and human interactions.
