I create sculptural ceramic work centered around cultural advocation, exploration, and celebration. My work commentates on the role and experience of a first gen Latino child in the US. This focus discuses how big of a role they play within their own families at a young age as well as how much they are fought against by our governing bodies. First generation children born to immigrant parents are needed to help navigate a new world for their own families and are responsible in figuring out their own. They are innocent and naive but are pushed to mature quickly all while being scrutinized for things they have no control over. I feel a sense of connection to my culture when putting my hands in clay. It makes me think of my parents always working with their hands to my grandfather who made bricks out of the dirt and clay in their area. This connection through clay and the fact that, when fired, the clay resembles my own skin.
