Artist Statement

This seven-part piece began as a purely digital image rendered in Adobe Photoshop using simple gradient ramps of color that were generated randomly by the application. I created about 25 different square frames of various randomized color ramps. I then manipulated the images using a few different algorithms, and through several iterations and variations of those algorithms, I produced 12 images that were aesthetically pleasing. Those images were subjected to another algorithm that allowed for scaling and enlarging without distortions or changes of context of the original images. This technique works well when Photoshop can identify the subject matter being enlarged; however, when the software only has abstract colors and shapes to reference, it comes back with interesting results. The results remind me of organic imagery and various shapes the moon takes as it moves through its cycles each month, thus the series title, “Lunar Cycles.”
