Motherless Child embodies the struggle and search for identity in societies that value hierarchy at the expense of compassion and acceptance. Born in Israel of mixed descent to parents of Ashkenazi and Sephardic heritages, I sought my identity in a community historically dedicated to the less standing outside of the more. In my teens, when arriving in the USA, I again experienced the pain of being the “other” as an immigrant, Jew, and embodiment of mixed descent. While my mother culture and society never fully embraced me, my family’s migration to a new country with a different language, expectations, and norms took from me my albeit stilt even, feeling of home that I knew. Without acceptance in my new home as a woman or part of the whole, I found myself twice orphaned. Through my work with its combination of cultural metaphors and symbols, I hope to demonstrate the universality in our humanity and the commonness that we tend to forget as we hold to our desire for uniqueness.
