Chayse Sampy is a painter from Houston, TX living in Tallahassee, FL where she is an MFA Candidate at Florida State University. She received her BFA from Louisiana State University where she was the recipient of the Hearst Scholarship, the Undergraduate Painting Scholarship and the Annual Black Scholar Award. Her work explores the many ways Black people have consciously perserved elements of our African roots and forged a new identity based in collectivity.Through mixed media painting derived from digitally collaged found images, I point to the shared and collaborative nature of the Black experience in America. Her work centers around themes of grief, survival, transformation, community, and memory. Sampy has exhibited regionally and nationally with recent projects including group exhibitions in the Nia Cultural Center (2022) and Working Method Contemporary Gallery (2022).
