Whoopie Goldberg has a comedy bit about every little black girl has put a towel on their head and pretended it was long straight hair. When I was five there was a new eastern import on American television. Sailor Moon; a Japanese animated show with a relatable cast of tween girls fighting evil. Changes were made to the show to "protect" western children, but were really to prevent Japanese influence on American children. One of these changes focused on the western beauty of the character Sailor Venus; something that I internalized. I became aware that this character's look had societal benefits and chose to identify with this character instead of one that matched my personality, as the show intended. I become aware that I was somehow lacking the western values associated with this “beauty” and I understood that someone like me was not intended to be the main character; choosing to identify with Sailor Venus instead of the also blonde title character of the show Sailor Moon.
