My painting "Searching for Doodlebugs" shows in a realistic setting a small boy under an old, rural house looking for doodlebugs, a name given to ant lions in our part of the south. They lie in wait, covered by granules of dirt in a cone-shaped structure in soft ground. When an ant or other unsuspecting insect slides down the sides of the cone and cannot climb out, the ant lion grabs it with its pinchers and makes a meal of it. As a child, I would take a stick, place it in the cone and swirl it around repeating the words, "Doodlebug, doodlebug, come out, your house is on fire". The odd-looking creature was harmless and would be replaced when we finished looking at it in the palm of our hands. It was one of the ways poor kids of a by-gone day could amuse themselves while waiting for mom or grandmother to finish the suppertime meal. Sadly, those kinds of adventures have been replaced by telephone screens.
