In my love for painting ships, I was excited to learn of this South Carolina beauty. The "Henrietta" was built in 1875 and was the largest wooden clipper ship ever built in South Carolina. At 210 feet long, its gigantic masts held 24 sails. It was larger than all of its famous contemporary clipper ships, including the USS Constitution. This great ship was built by Henry Buck of Bucksport, Maine, who was part of a famous shipbuilding family. He set up his operation on the Waccamaw River where cypress and longleaf pine were in abundance, and where the town of Bucksville was founded. The shipbuilding part of the business did not survive, because Buck had to bring in master shipbuilders from Maine, and that did not prove profitable. "Henrietta" sailed the seas of the Pacific as a cargo ship for 19 years before it was destroyed by a Japanese typhoon in 1894.
