I created "Spiral" out of a desire to sew an uplifting quilt, one that would provide light and levity during a dark and heavy time. (It was made one year into the pandemic.) I’m interested in how formal relationships of color, shape, texture, and scale can both reflect and inform emotional states. As an abstract artist who works with geometric shapes and patterns, I’m drawn to motifs that span cultures, and I think about how such symbols can produce a universal or shared visual language. Spirals and meanders are ancient motifs that symbolize infinity, or the eternal flow of things; the spiral depicts the path that leads the soul to evolve. Through the process of piecing scraps of fabric and hand quilting this work, I had time and space to reflect upon my life and consider the world around me. It is my hope that this quilt, with its repeating and receding rectangles, may serve as a portal that draws the viewer in and opens up pathways for contemplation.
