The work I create serves as a window into my inner imaginary world, or paracosm. The framework of my paracosm is based in real concerns about the climate crisis and the growing imbalance of the human and natural worlds. My younger self perceived the threat of climate change as nature’s defense against humanity. I imagined the natural world sending forth catastrophic events and, in my paracosm, seemingly impossible creatures to act as an immune system response for the Earth. In the Shinto religion there is a concept known as the kami, which are spirits or forces of nature that embody or take the form of natural features of anything from a mountain to the pebbles in a creek. These kami are similar to how I think of the creatures in my work-as an embodiment of nature and the incarnation of the natural world in a ‘being’. These beings share a common theme and message: push things too far and the world will push back, becoming something that is far less kind to humanity.
