The magical process of contact botanical printing is the inspiration and starting point for my current work. Eco or botanical printing is the art of transferring pigment from plant material onto a substrate using pressure, moisture, and heat. In Still Life with Pink Pitcher, fabric snippets were basted to a vintage linen tablecloth and then printed with strawberry tops (to resemble flowers), blackberry and rose leaves, cochineal bugs, and casuarina. I liked the outsider vibe of the beginning stage, but after I began stitching I felt the piece was just not working. It seemed fussy and lifeless. I sadly began to lose interest. However, I loved the back! I saw beauty in the tangled mess. It was the fiber version of the gestures, drips, and splatters that energized my paintings. It told the story of my process. Once I decided to go with "side B", I playfully finished working from both sides. Results from stitching blindly may not be what you imagined, but the happy accidents are a delight.
