When I lived in Columbus Georgia back in the 70s and 80s, downtown Columbus underwent a major face lift. An area which had fallen into decay as a result of suburban flight was slowly but steadily returned to life by a number of building and infrastructure projects. Sometime in the early 80s I remember reading about some buildings slated for demolition. As a painter who works primarily from my own photographs I went there looking for interesting subject matter. I took a series of photos and filed them away for future use. I rediscovered those and other photos from back then a couple of years ago and have used several for paintings. A couple of them contributed to the creation of this painting. And downtown Columbus is now a nice place to visit or live.
