These images are parts of my ongoing 'Payphones on Film' series, in which I am photographically documenting the remains of public telephones, strictly using 35mm film. This process begins as a sort of scavenger hunt, as I travel around the southeastern U.S., scoping out the remnants of these public fixtures that have held out and avoided removal. Most are in disrepair, some reclaimed by nature, though a select few still yield a dial tone. These photos in particular focus on the "reclaimed by nature" aspect, as they all depict payphones throughout the Carolinas at various stages of their erasure, both in function and in visibility. I find it essential that these scenes be captured using film photography - a process that has also been pushed to the wayside by many of the same technological advances that made the payphone largely obsolete.
