My work serves as an interface for looking at environmental crisis. I am interested in recontextualizing the visual idioms of ecological destruction and the rituals of ecological grief and reparations that emerge in response to this destruction. My recent work explores the emerging international “Rights of Nature” movement, as it plays out in an important legal battle to protect the waterways of Orange County, FL. Inspired by activists in countries such as Ecuador, Chile, New Zealand, and elsewhere in the United States, activists in Central Florida have turned to the Rights of Nature framework in an attempt to ward off ecological degradation, suing on behalf of the waters’ right to exist. I explore the significant philosophical and political shifts in our relationship with nature signaled by a rights-based discourse, in which nature is conceived not as a mute resource but as a living entity deserving of care.
