"The Light Within" is a work about transformation and persistence through adversity. It is about seeking out and returning to our center when things outside become unbearable; about the very moment we go inside when it is dark out and find there is still hope and light within. While the gender of the figure is neutral, the body is used to talk about the female body in particular and the pressure we (society) put on women from a young age to be small. This pressure isn't just about bodies, though, it is for our general existence and our perspectives/feelings/desires to take up very little space. The medium of crochet is intentional, because it so often gets categorized as craft, but rarely "fine art." In this way, crochet can be seen as an allegory for women and other marginalized groups, as a "marginalized art," a "lesser-than" art form. "The Light Within" rejects this notion, offering an opportunity to consider the darkness that marginalizes and imagine transformation instead.
