The title of this drawing is "The Tourist." This humorous picture was done while I was living in Cambodia near to Angkor Wat. These ancient temples are incredible and draw a great many foreign visitors. It was my dream to live there since I was a boy reading National Geographic magazine, but I was also made aware of how commercialization affects the lives of the Cambodian people through my conversations with people who make their living from the tourist trade. I drew this sitting in the cafe at my guest house. By poking fun at the tourists (including myself,) this was definitely the drawing I did that got the most attention from my local friends, and I needed to make several photocopies for them. I grew up in Virginia Beach, so I understand the love/hate relationship locals have with tourists.
