"Đi về" (Go home) focuses on my family's departure from Vietnam to America, and is a complex exploration of memory and identity. Central to the piece are laser-engraved joss sticks featuring images of my family at the airport, layered to depict the scene of their departure. Through the burning of the image of their former lives in Vietnam, home will be a fleeting memory, distant but still deeply ingrained in the ashes. To house the joss sticks, I designed a ceramic incense holder inspired by Vietnam's dynasties, blending elements from both my Nguyen and Tran lineages with ornate handles and a tapered form. I created an altar that references traditional Vietnamese furniture, drawing from my childhood experiences while also incorporating a modular flat-pack design. The altar features cloud motifs, emphasizing the piece's connection to Vietnamese culture. Ultimately, "Đi về" (Go home) weaves together these elements, highlighting every immigrants experience of leaving home for a new country.
