This work is made, in part, from the wood of a tree that I grew up with as a child. In 1973, my mother planted a maple tree that in 2020 needed to be cut down. This work is made with material from this tree. In the middle of this highly crafted wood sculpture, I have placed found object toys. This work is a homage to a boy and his toys. My belief in the wood spirit Hamadryas, or wood nymphs, that are said to inhabit trees, motivated me to explore the inner beauty in this wood, and by using forgotten toys, I am making a connection to a boy and the toys he scattered around the base of our shared maple tree. My sculptures are made by clamping, bending, gluing, and screwing wood forms. It is non-objective with geometric elements of triangles, circles, and straight lines. I prefer exactness and precision with finished wood. Some works contain elements of gold leaf, mother of pearl, or fragmented eggshell which appear as surface variations. Most of this work is created with inlays of wood veneer.
