"A Folding Chair" is inspired by Shirley Chisholm's quote: "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair." Chisholm, the first African American woman to seek the presidency in 1972, encouraged others to create their own space in conversations. Through "A Folding Chair," I use symbolism to express my experiences as a woman of color, an immigrant, and a Latina artist in the southeastern U.S. I've faced challenges in being heard and recognized, from casual gatherings to formal workplaces, and often amplified by my dyslexia and self-consciousness when communicating in another language. Nevertheless, I have valuable perspectives shaped by my background and life journey. Though I may stand out for my appearance and accent, I proudly wear my allegorical luchador mask and carry my personal history - my childhood, values, education, beliefs, and heritage - ready to share once I set down my folding chair and join the conversation.
