This piece represents a journey I took, stitch by stitch, knot by knot, watching and reacting to the shapes and textures that slowly developed. I began with little more than a color palate, an initial gestural line with my first coil, and curiosity about where it might lead if I kept reversing the direction of the coil instead of continuing it around and around like what is more typically done with basketry. It was an organic interactive process, feeling the piece extend out around me as I worked; becoming both a tangible record of the path I had been treading, and an object that seemed imbued with some sort of primal power, reminiscent of the land formations and ritual objects I grew up with from many of the world's indigenous peoples. For whatever reasons, those threads run strongly in me, and I was compelled to celebrate them here.
