In "American Idol," I explore ways in which our environment shapes not only our interests but the very pathways we're able to pursue. On a lesser scale, I observed an example of this in my son, the subject of this painting, who for a period had aspirations of playing basketball. Despite his interest, the removal of local basketball hoops - an issue of its own - limited his access to this pursuit. Even in public spaces, where a court might represent a place of recreation and opportunity, hoops are sometimes removed due to perceptions about who can gather and where. Such decisions shape both our access and our personal pursuits. This work questions what we value, what we glamorize, and how each person must navigate their journey with whatever tools they have, underscoring the quiet but powerful ways community, policy and perception impact individual dreams.
