Artist: Hampton Watts | Location: Savannah, GA
Savannah, GA
Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Hampton Watts has been captivated by art ever since drawing at his grandmother's house. His talents took him abroad to France, where he studied the works of figurative masters. In returning to the United States he became classically trained in oil painting, receiving a BFA Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2015.
Hampton's work has taken on a more refined note, using southern narratives as the driving force behind his storytelling. Rooting paintings in storied imagery from the likes of Faulkner and O'Connor, each painting speaks to the breadth of southern storytelling. Hampton strips down key markers, recontextualizing his paintings for a modern audience in such a way that acknowledges the mythology of life in the coastal south.
The historic Governor Thomas Bennett House & William Aiken House both feature his works in their collections. Hampton currently creates works alongside his wife, fiber artist Courtney Watts.
