I use hair and braiding as a tool to paint a picture of the people who adorn it, as well as the people whose hands are active within the art of hair care. Each piece is a mixed media sculpture that represents a collective portrait aiming to demonstrate the beauty and cultural significance of Black hair, where the community, stories, and the history of resistance are weaved within. I capture both personal and collective stories, creating a space where individual experiences with beauty standards, history, and self-definition can be honored. Frames in my work reference the cultural constructions of Black identities, while the portraits inside echo how a simple act of upkeep becomes a meaningful, performative ritual that connects us to ourselves and each other. In honoring stories centered around hair, I aim to foster connection and understanding, emphasizing the powerful role that Black hair plays in shaping and affirming identities.
