Androgyny: a blend that defies the clear lines of femininity and masculinity. In today's world, many young people are breaking free from the rigid labels of boy and girl. Unfettered by societal norms, they may identify as heterosexual or find their place within the LGBTQ+ spectrum. Unlike my generation in the 60s and 70s, which faced a stark choice between two genders, today's youth are empowered to explore and define their own sexual identities, experiencing less stigma and rejection from their peers. For Briar, the journey through puberty is filled with questions about who they are and where they fit in. They remain indifferent to stereotypes, even as society attempts to box them in. As I painted Briar's portrait, I found myself losing track of whether Briar was a boy or a girl. They truly embodied androgyny. It is crucial for society to support young people in embracing their sexuality, allowing for fluid and evolving definitions of identity.
