This work is part of a series that visually documents my recent breast cancer journey. This painting contrasts the compression bra and the bust-length medical gowns worn during visits to my surgeon. One required me to bind myself up while the other exposed me with its excessive, flowy material. One made me feel restricted while the other made me feel bare and vulnerable. One was harsh with velcro, hooks, and zippers; the other had cheerful flower patterns. Neither made me feel pretty or confident. But at 53 years old, they both made me wonder if I'd ever feel pretty or confident again with my new normal. The palette and design elements are inspired by the medical facilities visited and the equipment used during my treatment. The use of clear gesso leaves the grain of the wood panel raw and exposed, much like how I felt during my journey with breast cancer.
