"Carried Along Refracted Currents" draws inspiration from the resilience of life in extreme environments, particularly extremophiles--microorganisms that thrive in harsh conditions like volcanic rock. This piece emerged from my research in Iceland, where I was deeply moved by the island's raw, ever shifting landscape. During my time there, I collaborated with a microbiologist studying the unique ecosystems of Surtsey, a volcanic island untouched by human influence, where life has been discovered in every crevice. The installation reflects my fascination with the unseen worlds beneath the surface, where life persists against all odds. Using materials like iron and salt--elements found in both the Earth and in our bodies--the work explores the deep connection between nature and our physical existence. It invites contemplation on the hidden processes that sustain life, even in volatile environments and highlights the interconnectedness between human experience and geological forces.
