A contradicting dichotomy is created between the opulent ornamentation and the threat to functionality of the syringe. Inviting materials and details draw the viewer in but also push away in repulsion because of the nature of the function and implied relation to the abject body. The trompe l'oeil glass and metal syringe is ornamented with gothic architecture of stained glass flying buttresses, filigree, spires, and pinnacles. The syringe is designed of various natural materials and precious metals in states of repair and disrepair. The materiality harkens to an earlier period in medicine. They reflect moments where I crossed paths with the medical world. I have a partner with chronic illnesses, I worked in assisted living, and I am beginning to experience my own medical shortcomings. My deeper involvement in medicine has shed light on the pain, abuse, and red tape at the hands of the bureaucratic system but also the positive experiences provided by medical professionals that help.
