This painting confronts the devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene in my current home, Asheville, NC. The work documents the ravaged and now unfamiliar landscape through firsthand observations, photographs, and memories. Objects and landmarks transform into menacing heaps, swooning trees adorned with plastic and metal detritus, vehicles rendered into muddied, skeletal remains. The painted image emerges like the rubble itself, both recognizable and falling into visual limbo. The title "Channel" refers to both the way in which the French Broad River swallowed up and carried away its surroundings, and my own attempts to "channel" or comprehend the river's immense, destructive power. The image, captured 22 days after the storm, reflects its lasting, continued impact, long after the water itself receded.
