As an artist, I have always been drawn to the things that people discard. What we will throw away says a lot about the way we live. Our attachment to things, what we see as precious, or perhaps as not precious, is deeply rooted in our cultural values. Everyone would agree that childhood is precious, but what about the mountains of stuff, things that are purchased and accumulate in this brief moment in time? Modern, American childhood is full of stuff: little furniture, big toys, games, clothes. The quality or useful lifespan of these things is so very brief, and then these objects go on to live long, enduring lives in the dump, probably outliving the children they served. This work seeks to challenge and divert this excessive waste, to recontextualize, and elevate the detritus of childhood into new experiences of curiosity, surprise and pleasure.
