"Fault Line" is a collection of thirteen lidded ceramic forms. The pieces were constructed using a stoneware clay body and then covered with porcelain slip and colored terra sigillata. Fired in saggars with metallic oxides and salt, the surfaces take on an erratic earthy patina. The lids of each form were fired one additional time to add a smokey layer of carbon. The outlines of the forms, as well as the surfaces developed in firing, are intended to reference a crack or fracture in the earth's crust. Metaphorically, "Fault Line," also alludes to an underlying trauma, grief, or mental health issue that can weaken or fracture the bedrock of a person's self-image or self-worth. And while it might be considered a weakness in the system, a fault line can also be beautiful. For fault lines mark the place at which we can expect great movement, upheaval, and change. The world is never static. And with this kinetic energy comes the possibility that the landscape of one's life could change.
