Every woodworker is a collector, and every sculptor a hoarder. I have the unfortunate fate of being both. My collection of lumber, amassed from various Craigslist ads, often comes as rough sawn lots, making the wood's true appearance a mystery until it's processed. "Fault" was born from a set of boards still adorned with bark. While processing these boards, I discovered each strip breaking at a fault line running through them - tiny canyons smoothed by time and the elements, rather than the usual fibrous splintery hairs. Instead of cutting off the ragged edges, I chose to listen and respond to what the material offered. I designed an object to showcase each piece's unique character. Drawing inspiration from 15th-century cathedrals with buttress and vault-like forms, the trestle structure emphasizes function over form. The resulting piece juxtaposes the visual language of our constructed and utilitarian world with the softer, vulnerable, and organic material shaped by time.
