I was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and came to the U.S. at age 6. Leaving behind everything I knew at the time, my home, school, places we'd often visit, but most importantly family. I missed quality time with my grandparents. My dad's mom Florita, was a mom of 10 kids. She always spoke about the importance of family and how much we all needed each other. My aunts and uncles felt like second parents, and cousins felt like siblings. Mama Florita made that happen, and created such a close-knit family. In this portrait of Florita, I want to honor her in the place she seemed the happiest, a place where all her kids and grandchildren would share a meal and stories together. Combining the image of her as the head of the table in the kitchen, and the reflection of outside looking in. This was our childhood home, a place that felt like a home only when she was in it. My grandma passed away 2 years ago unable to communicate and share her stories anymore, but she'll forever be remembered.
