"Fruit Tree" is an exploration of queer world-building surrounding my personal relationship with growth and gender interpreted through my identity as a queer-masculine individual. Patriarchal stereotypes sort the masculine into the role of "protector" or "destroyer," and the feminine into "carer" or "cultivator," much like placing plants in isolated terracotta pots. Where does my role as nurturer of nature in a garden land in this narrow categorization? I am not more or less masculine in the garden, so the sorting itself must be broken, fragile just like the terracotta. Queerness is then a powerful tool to clear the way for new growth, new discoveries, and new potentials to nurture. "Fruit Tree" encapsulates my role as both the planted and the planter, the sapling and the caretaker, the giver and the receiver of my own identity.
