Coming to America has long been an inspiration for me, capturing the allure of cross-cultural encounters and the universal fairytale of love. In particular, the wedding scene, where Akeem finds Lisa beneath her veil; although the film is a comedy, this moment epitomizes a soft magic and heart--a fleeting moment layered with anticipation, transformation, and union. This brief scene felt like the culmination of a journey, yet it passes in the blink of an eye. In my work, I chose to extend this moment, stitching Lisa at the exact instant she steps into her new role as Queen-to-Be. My piece imagines her feelings in this pivotal, unfamiliar space--a blend of excitement, pride, and vulnerability. The gathered figures surrounding her represent a vast, supportive presence, as if a reunion or homecoming is unfolding. Through this work, I wanted to amplify the sentiment of togetherness, heritage, and belonging--a reminder of the powerful communal bond that surrounds moments of personal transformation.
